At the Salzburg Festival, Friederike Kühl has frequently performed at the Kollegienkirche, most recently as Soprano Acuto in Luigi Nono’s Io, frammento di Prometeo. At Zurich Opera, she appeared in the world premiere of Beat Furrer’s Das große Feuer, and at the Berlin State Opera she took on the role of Sister Jasmin in Georg Friedrich Haas’ chamber opera Thomas.
At the Wien Modern Festival, she appeared in the Glass Hall of the Musikverein (Morton Feldman) and at the Secession (Manos Tsangaris). At the Ettlingen Castle Festival, she portrayed the role of the Queen of the Night.
Even as a child, Friederike Kühl was a passionate chorister, which fostered a special love for the great oratorios and led to her "debut" at the age of 14 in the Tonhalle Zurich as the Boy in Mendelssohn’s Elijah. In this field, she owes a great deal to Helmuth Rilling and the Bachakademie Stuttgart, where, at the age of 18, she sang the St John Passion with the JSB Ensemble. She now performs as a soloist with choirs from Warnemünde to Graz.
With the vocal ensemble Cantando Admont (conducted by Cordula Bürgi), Friederike Kühl is a regular guest at renowned festivals, working with conductors such as Beat Furrer, Pablo Heras-Cassado, Sylvain Cambreling, David Robertson and Emilio Pomarico in venues including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Kölner Philharmonie, the Radialsystem Berlin and the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon.
Friederike Kühl is a member of the Bremen-based ensemble Phaeton, which weaves together pantomime and Baroque dance into musical tableaux. She is also a founding member of the Workers Union collective for contemporary music theatre and of the chanson ensemble Die Damen und Herren Daffke.
She received the City of Salzburg’s ‘Out of the Box’ Award for innovative projects at the interface between art and science, and is a scholarship holder of Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now as well as the Oskar and Vera Ritter Foundation as part of the Germany Scholarship scheme.
Friederike Kühl was born in Stuttgart and grew up in Dornach near Basel. She studied in Rostock and gained further artistic inspiration during her Erasmus stay in Salerno (Italy), as well as through masterclasses with Renate Faltin, Rudolf Piernay, Ian Bostridge, Maria Husmann, Sarah Maria Sun and Gemma Bertagnolli.
